If you were a kid from the 80’s or 90’s you will have played with walkie-talkies. You usually only had one TV per household and you were pretty lucky if you had a games console back then, so if mum and dad wanted to watch the TV you were forced to go outside to make up your own adventure with your friends. Walkie-talkies where must haves, there was no point having a den and a tree house if you couldn’t talk to each other at range; because let’s be honest two cups and a bit of string never really worked. Now however as we are in the 20th century this two way communication device has gotten really good, with most walkie-talkies for kids actually being of really good quality, with little feedback and pretty durable too. Below we will look at some of the top rated walkie talkies for kids.

What does “long” range walkie-talkie actually mean?

If you ever played with walkie-talkies twenty or more years ago you will be aware that they weren’t perfect. They didn’t actually have a great range, they got through their nine volt batteries pretty quick, didn’t always work that well especially if they started to get wet, or if you were trying to communicate through walls and other obstacles, but the most notable thing that has changed is the distance over which they can transmit.

Back then it would have probably been only a few hundred yards, but now as things have changed from Analog to digital, you can start to communicate over greater distances, literally we are talking miles! A relatively good price decent starter model can easily communicate a couple of miles. Other advancements have made the devices more rugged and in some cases waterproof, so they can be dropped and splashed without being damaged. Devices are also smaller these days as technology has moved forward. Another really cool feature of modern long range walkie-talkies is that they now come with rechargeable batteries so your kids won’t keep bothering you for replacement ones!

What models should you look into?

There are a massive variety of walkie-talkies for kids ranging from the cheap to the relatively expensive, so it can be quite hard to decide what to purchase, below we have reviews of a few popular models on the market so you can browse through and decide based on your needs and budgets. With so many models saying that they offer the best walkie talkies for kids we aim to make it easy to decide which ones to go for.

For the cost this device is a great starter child’s walkie-talkie. It has a backlit LED screen so it can be used in the dark and will function over 22 frequencies, meaning that it is technically compatible with most other walkie-talkies, not just the same model ones. The device is small and portable with a decent sized antennae so in open spaces it has a range of over 2 miles.

This particular model doesn’t come with rechargeable batteries and each device takes two AA batteries, but since those are pretty common it shouldn’t be too much hassle. The BELLSOUTH T388 2 Piece T-388 22 FRS and GMRS UHF Radio comes in at under $20 for the pair meaning that you aren’t even breaking the bank! These really are a good option if you are looking for a set of durable yet cheap walkie talkies for kids.

These start at $30, so ten dollars more than the previous range, but for it you get a lot of extras. This devices is simple to the point and just has the buttons you need to operate it without anything too fancy or confusing. These also require 3 AAA batteries to run but have everything offered in the T388 and more. The range extends to almost 4 miles in the open. The device is very small and compact and comes in a variety of colors. Our favourite is the bright orange that won’t be easily lost or misplaced if dropped.

The sound quality is outstanding for the price. Even through walls or other sources of interference when testing these we had no trouble what so ever. Again these also have 22 channels and therefore work well with other devices.

The devices will function for up to 3.5 hours of continuous use or up to 9 hours of standby time and also have a backlit LCD display, which monitors your battery life as you use it.

If you want things to be a little more covert, the UOKOO walkie-talkies are actually available in 4 colors camouflage being one of them. These are great for kids when they take part in activities such as scouting. This is probably a set of kids walkie talkies they are going to love.

The black models might be an option too if you are looking for something a little more sophisticated. You never know your kid might like playing secret agents, they always have black walkie-talkies! Whatever color you pick these are a really good set of walkie talkies for children.

This device is probably the best value for money on the list so far. Although it comes in at just under $50 it has pretty much everything you will ever need from a walkie-talkie. It even comes with belt clips. The range on this device is amazing, reaching up to an incredible 23 miles!

Since it is built by Motorola you know you can trust the quality of the components insider as well as the integrity of the device overall. This device comes with its own battery charger and battery packs that last between 8 to 10 hours. Apart from the 22 standard channels you also get access to 11 weather channels, meaning that they are slightly more professional than the rest. You can also lock people out of your conversations with a 121 privacy code meaning no interference or unwanted listeners. These Motorola’s really do come with amazing reviews all round.

Another great example of a pretty cool set of walkie-talkies for children. They come in at a reasonable $40 and have everything from you need, but this time for a set of 4. Depending on how many kids you are trying to entertain these cold be a really good solution. Again these need AA batteries that aren’t included when you purchase it, it but they have everything you need. If you want to purchase more than just two devices this pack of 4 is a really good option.

If you want to invest a little bit more money and go for something more serious the Midland LXT500VP3 2 Way Radio 8 PACK Plus Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers might be the option for you. For example if you are looking at running tours for kids, or maybe you are a scout troop leader and you want to keep in touch with the kids at camp these could be a good solution. These also have audio jacks and therefore are a pretty good walkie talkie headset for kids.

For just under $260 you get a set of 8 walkie-talkies. These have an incredible range of 24 miles, 22 channels and come with rechargeable batteries (and 4 chargers). These also have a feature that is great for removing back ground noise.

Whatever your choice, we have all your options covered above. These devices are great for all your outdoor communication needs and are great for kids to go outside and play with. These should be the only walkie-talkie reviews you should ever need!
